History of Monte

History of Monte

The civil parish of Monte was funded in 1565, and then known as Nossa Senhora do Monte.

One of is long features was a rack railway, which for a long time connected Monte with Funchal. Unfortunately, during the Second World War, the train was taken out of service. However, there are still vestiges of this railway at the bottom of the hill, where the original base station still exists today.

The civil parish of Monte celebrates one of the most important feasts in Madeira Island - the Assumption of the Virgin Mary - which takes place on the 15th of August.
